Owl butterfly, June 2014
This individual was photographed in old-growth rainforest on Isla Colon on the morning of June 23, 2014. Owl butterflies like this Caligo etreus dionysus often show up in bait traps, and are also frequently found in the vicinity of rotten bananas placed on the forest floor. The upperside is marked with purple and has a broad pale yellow hindwing margin, a reliable way to identify this butterfly in flight.
